Below is a quick summary of some of the more common Speech and Language Problems. If you suspect your child may have some difficulties with Speech or Language, an Assessment is the first step. In some cases the child's Speech or Language skills may be age appropriate and in this case no further treatment will be necessary. If delays are identified a treatment plan will be developed appropriate to the Child's Communication profile and areas of need.
Phonology and Articulation problems - The child may have difficulty making a certain sound, miss sounds or use the wrong sound within words e.g. saying tat for cat or sake for snake etc.
Receptive Language disorders - The child may have problems understanding what is being said and may not respond appropriately to questions. They may become upset or frustrated because they do not understand what is being said or they may appear very passive and disinterested in language addressed to them.
Expressive Language disorders - The child appears to understand what is being said but cannot express him or herself. The child may use only single words or very short phrases when their peers are using many more words. They may struggle to use single words and may prefer to use gestures, grunts or going and getting what they want rather than communicating.
Listening and Auditory Processing Difficulties - Some children have difficulties listening and responding appropriately. This is not a problem with hearing but instead appears to be more related to how the child processes sounds and is able to make sense of what they are hearing. A child may also have difficulty maintaining their attention on an instruction or may have memory difficulties that make it difficult for them to listen and then complete a task.
Social Language/ Pragmatic Difficulties - Some individuals display problems with social skills such as conversation, they may talk too much, interrupt and invade others space or conversational turn or they may be too passive in conversation and have difficulty with the "back and forth" nature of a conversation.
Attention Difficulties - Many children who present with Attention control issues may have one or more of the above Speech or Language delays. It is understandably difficult to focus fully on something if you are having difficulty understanding or processing what is happening around you.
